Rich Chocolatey Goodness
If you are a chocolate fan, you will love this easy chocolate custard. We use raw cacao to get that rich, dark chocolate flavor and then sweeten with maple syrup. I personally like dark chocolate without a lot of sweetener added, so you can definitely add more or less maple syrup to sweeten to your own taste. Start small and then slowly add more as needed.
Gelatin vs Collagen
We use grass-fed gelatin to give this treat it’s custard-like texture. The gelatin makes it firm up a bit as it cools in the fridge, and then is like a jello/pudding texture, but a little firmer. We use grass-fed gelatin like this brand. You want to make sure you get gelatin, and not collagen peptides (or hydrolyzed collagen) so that it does in fact firm up. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a soupy concoction.
More About Gelatin
I love adding either gelatin or collagen to treats because it feels like a way to make them healthier! There are many health benefits of gelatin and collagen, but I particularly like that they are great for gut health. As someone with an autoimmune condition, I am always trying to heal my gut. You can read more about the differences between gelatin and collagen as well as the many health benefits here.
Whatever Toppings You Like
You can really top these easy chocolate custard cups with whatever you love! We had some fresh blueberries in the fridge, so we threw some on top. I also love adding a little crunch and texture with raw cacao nibs. Plus, I sprinkled a little extra raw cacao powder on top too. Duh, more rich chocolatey goodness! Any fresh or frozen fruit would be yummy, chocolate chips, granola, chopped nuts, the list goes on…what are some of your favorites?
